CCSSO in a joint venture with the Smithsonian Institution is pleased to announce the publication of a social studies lesson about civic responsibility from a unit titled Liberty and Citizenship. The lesson is part of a unit created through the work of the Comprehensive Social Studies Assessment Project (CSSAP) and the Smithsonian Institution that appears in the Fall 2007 edition of Smithsonian in Your Classroom. This publication is distributed to every elementary and middle school in the United States.

Included in the publication is an article, Teaching and Assessing for Understanding in Social Studies, that explains how the lesson and unit being showcased demonstrate the integration of research models for alignment, instructional scaffolding, and backward design of instruction and assessment. In addition, the lesson and unit model how to use resources that are available through websites such as the Smithsonian Institution to enrich the lesson and engage the students in the learning process.
